Andrew Bird in Kansas City
by Keith.
Andrew Bird played in Kansas City at the Uptown last Friday. This was my second time seeing him live. He puts on an incredible show.
If you haven’t heard Andrew Bird, you’re missing out. The looped violin strumming, plucking and traditional playing, with amazing whistling interspersed between emotionally intense lyrics, all keep me coming back to his music. He’s probably got more “plays” in my iTunes than any other artist out there.
His set had these 4 mystical spiral sculptures that dangled from the rafters. Colored spotlights would shift around the stage casting these amazing shadows that complimented the music so well. Notice their shifts in the pictures below. They were mesmerizing.
All these shots below were taken with my Fuji x100. I was really impressed by how it performed!

Those “mystical spiral sculptures” were created by Ian Schneller of Specimen Products. They are called aersosel horns. Ian also created the spinning Janus horn seen behind Andrew in your photos. For Andrew and Ian’s Sonic Arboretum in Chicago, MCA Dec 2011, Ian and his team created 75 plant-shaped horn speakers, some as tall as 9 feet. The horns served the PA system – it was magical.
